The best time of year to install sod for Florida is in the Spring. Late Summer and into early Fall are the second best times to install sod as you are past the harsh Florida summer heat and before our warm season grasses start to go dormant in Winter. While you can install sod at any time of the year it is best to install while temperatures are favorable to the variety of grass you are installing.

A single pallet of sod contains 400 square feet of turf, on average this should take a single person between 1 and 2 hours to install.
How long will sod last on a pallet?
The length of time you can leave sod on a pallet depends on the time of year and temperature. During the hotter months of the year the sod will brown within 2 days of harvest. Keeping sod moist and in the shade will prolong the lifespan but yellowing will still be an issue with lower layers on the pallet. In the cooler months of the year sod will last longer. It is usually best to install sod as soon as it is delivered for best results.
If the sod does yellow in the pallet, will it survive?
Yes, yellowed sod should recover if quickly installed and watered properly. If sod has started to turn brown or a dark yellow it will have to produce new growth to become green.

When can I mow newly installed sod?
Sod can be mowed as soon as it looks like it needs to be mowed, however do not mow sod if it has not rooted yet. Generally it is best not to mow more than one third of the blade length per mowing, this helps reduce the risk of shock and discoloring. Ideally, mowing with a push mower for the first 6 weeks is best to avoid the weight of a tractor disrupting the establishment of sod.
How Much Sod Will I Need?
Each pallet of sod contains 400 square feet of sod. Measure the length and the width of the area you want to lay sod and multiply Length x Width to figure out your square footage, then divide by 400 to get the number of pallets.
40ft x 35ft = 1,400sqft
1,400 / 400 = 3.5 Pallets of sod
How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
Sod can vary in weight based on variety and weather. Dry sod will weigh less than sod that has been soaked by rain. On average a pallet of sod can weigh from 2000 to 3000 pounds.
